For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:11-13
Claude Jenkins was required to enroll in the “Game and Conservation Management” course. The course was designed to be taken early in the academic schedule as it provided students with the fundamentals of wildlife conservation and management, including definitions of terms, principles of conservation, conservation history, wildlife values, approaches to management, etc. The course, in many ways, provided students with a foundation upon which to build their wildlife-related knowledge. Early in the course, Claude learned that a lesson in wildlife stewardship is more than academic- it is biblical.
While attending class early in the semester, the lecture seemed to be on par with the course syllabus until the professor wrote “Genesis 1:28” on the blackboard. (Yes, white chalk and blackboards were the primary tools for educating students at this time.) The professor stated that Genesis 1:28 is the bibilical mandate for wildlife stewardship and the foundation for wildlife conservation and management. Although Claude had been a Christian for many years, this biblical lesson on wildlife stewardship was the first for him. Being thankful that this lesson was taught to him as a beginning wildlife student, Genesis 1:28 later became the basis for his worldview regarding wildlife policy, use, and management.

Claude revisited this lesson from college when he began interacting with people who had an interest in wildlife. He soon learned that the vast majority of people with whom he interacted were not concerned with being stewards of wildlife resources. Whether Christian or non-Christian, their worldview regarding wildlife stewardship was the same. Claude felt troubled when he could not determine Christians from non-Christians based on their worldview of wildlife stewardship. He believed that like himself, Christians were not taught the biblical mandate of wildlife stewardship. Yet, without a doubt, this disconnect of Christians to God-honoring wildlife stewardship was and is limiting the ministry of Christians, particulary those who are involved in wildlife policy, use and management.

of interacting with people who had an interest in wildlife, Claude was certain, that the prevailing worldview of wildlife stewardship among Christians is secular- not biblical. Overwhelmed with disappointment and concern, Claude once again was reminded of the biblical lesson he had received years earlier by his “Game and Conservation Management” professor. Because he had kept all of his notes from his wildlife courses, Claude located his notes from that lecture which included the Genesis 1:28 mandate.
While reading these notes from years ago, Claude became convicted to share with others what our Creator demands of us regarding wildlife stewardship. Thus, out of obedience to our Lord and Savior, Wildlife Stewardship Apologetics began.

“Mus musculus”- this is the scientific name for a common house mouse. My dad, Claude Jenkins, taught me this when I was about 3 years old. Since then, he has taught me so much more about wildlife stewardship. More importantly, he’s shown me what true passion is- not just for wildlife but for our Lord and Savior. As a wife, mom, homesteader, business owner, and more, I know that I would not be where I am today without my father’s spiritual leadership. What he is doing with WSA is what he has taught me my whole life. Now, I teach these principles to my three children. As common as a mus musculus, my prayer is that WSA will be common in every believer’s household.
